Victorian Tiles Scottish Borders, Jedburgh

We carried out the restoration, repair and specialist cleaning of a Victorian geometric tile floor in Jedburgh, Scottish Borders. The project involved carefully relaying damaged sections, replacing missing Victorian tiles with matching original reclaimed tiles and conserving the historic floor while preserving as much original fabric as possible.

Following extensive screed repairs, damaged and missing Victorian tiles were matched with reclaimed originals before the floor was sympathetically cleaned and restored. Every stage of the work was carried out using conservation-led techniques appropriate for this historic property.

The property was a former merchants’ mill house beside a river in the Scottish Borders. With the floor only a short distance above the water table, moisture within the building had caused efflorescence, resulting in salt deposits appearing on the surface of the Victorian tiles.

To minimise the risk of introducing additional moisture, the floor was cleaned using carefully controlled methods and a latex-bound screed where appropriate. The completed restoration demonstrates our experience in the repair, conservation and specialist cleaning of Victorian tiled floors throughout Jedburgh, the Scottish Borders and across Scotland.
