Victorian tile floor project in Edinburgh, Scotland
BLOG
One of our relaying projects in Edinburgh. The original floor had been removed from the vestibule presumably due to movement and loss of tiles and integrity.
The replacement were 1970’s bathroom tiles whist functional were not a great match to the original Victorian scheme.
Team Eden re-laid new tiles to the area and instated and new sandstone threshold.
The historic tile team are expert at interpreting the original design intent of a Victorian tile floor and coming up with a design in keeping and complimentary to the original Victorian tiles. The design is presented to the client at the planning stage of a project so any alterations can be made prior to the start of the Victorian tile project.
We make the tile floor up in our studio and the foundations and screed to the floor are instated months before the Victorian tiles are laid to ensure the floor is well cured to avoid any subsidence and movement once the Victorian tiles have been laid.
The tiles are laid to accommodate the original levels and also the levels of front doors and storm doors. Nothing is ever fully straight in historic buildings and the team lay the field or interior of the Victorian floor prior to the border so any discrepancies can be accommodated on the outer frame of the Victorian tile design.
While we can cast Victorian tile thresholds in cement, terrazzo or natural cements we also offer the installation of Scottish stone thresholds to finish Victorian tile projects nicely.
To the delight of the client this Victorian tile floor in Edinburgh had its design and geometry expertly reinstated.
