Archaeological Conservation of Historic Mosaics & Tiles
Historic tiled floors and mosaics are occasionally uncovered during archaeological excavations, building renovations and conservation projects. These discoveries may date from the Roman, medieval, post-medieval or Victorian periods, and each requires careful assessment to preserve their archaeological, architectural and historical significance.
At Victorian Tile Restoration & Repair, we provide specialist conservation services for historic mosaics, Victorian tiled floors, geometric floor tiles and archaeological discoveries throughout Scotland and the North of England. We work with homeowners, archaeologists, museums, architects, conservation professionals, local authorities, churches and private clients on projects ranging from individual archaeological finds to nationally significant heritage sites.
Every project begins with a detailed condition assessment to record the construction, materials, condition and significance of the floor.
Where practical conservation is required, our approach follows recognised conservation principles, retaining as much original historic fabric as possible while using compatible, reversible and sympathetic repair techniques. Loose or fragile areas are carefully stabilised, historic bedding consolidated where appropriate and missing sections repaired using materials selected to complement the original construction.
Alongside practical conservation, we prepare condition survey reports, conservation assessments and technical specifications for architects, surveyors, heritage organisations, museums and principal contractors. We also provide specialist advice to support listed building consent, scheduled monument consent, archaeological recording and conservation management plans where historic tiled floors and mosaics form part of a wider heritage project.
