Victorian tile floors and historic mosaics are remarkably durable, often surviving for well over a century in domestic properties, churches, civic buildings, listed buildings and other historic properties throughout Scotland. Despite their longevity, it is common to find areas where tiles have become cracked, loose, chipped or entirely missing. Building works, structural movement, inappropriate repairs and decades of foot traffic can all contribute to localised deterioration. Even the loss of a small number of tiles can significantly affect the appearance and stability of a historic tile floor.

In our experience, once tiles become loose, deterioration can spread quickly. The strength of a Victorian tile floor relies upon each tile being supported by those surrounding it. When tiles are lost or become unstable, neighbouring tiles are subjected to increased movement and stress, often resulting in further cracking and failure.
