How We Restore, Clean and Repair Victorian Tile Floors in Scotland
Every Victorian tile restoration project begins with a detailed survey and condition assessment. As specialists in the repair, restoration, and conservation of Victorian tile floors, our approach is founded upon the retention of historic fabric wherever possible. Rather than replacing original materials unnecessarily, we seek to understand the causes of deterioration and develop a repair strategy appropriate to the age, significance, and condition of the floor.
Over almost three decades we have worked on Victorian tile floors, geometric tile schemes, mosaics, and decorative surfaces throughout Scotland and the wider UK. One of the most common misconceptions surrounding Victorian tile restoration is that the objective is to make the floor look new. In reality, the most successful projects retain the character, patina, and evidence of age that make these floors special. Our role is to stabilise, repair, clean, and protect the floor whilst respecting its history, craftsmanship, and original design.
Rather than relying upon aggressive cleaning chemicals or abrasive methods, we undertake careful cleaning trials before recommending a treatment programme. This allows us to assess previous coatings, historic staining, chemical damage, and the condition of the original glazed surface. In many cases, our aim is not simply to clean the floor, but to refresh and rejuvenate it in a manner that delivers lasting results rather than a short-term cosmetic improvement. One of our greatest strengths is producing a floor that feels cleaner, brighter, and more cohesive whilst avoiding the harsh chemical appearance often associated with inappropriate restoration methods.
Every floor and mosaic scheme is different.
