The team were fortunate to undertake the repair and conservation of this beautiful Victorian mosaic floor in Dowanhill, Glasgow, one of the city’s finest Victorian residential areas, renowned for its grand sandstone villas, elegant tenements and original entrance vestibules. Many properties throughout Dowanhill, the West End of Glasgow and the surrounding districts retain their original Victorian mosaic floors, which can usually be sympathetically conserved rather than replaced.

This historic Victorian mosaic floor had suffered from years of wear, previous repairs, localised movement, loose tesserae, deteriorated grout joints and areas of surface soiling. Following a detailed inspection, our work began with a careful conservation clean to remove accumulated dirt, old coatings and surface staining while preserving the original marble, glass and ceramic tesserae.

Loose and damaged areas were then carefully lifted, the substrate stabilised where required, and the original mosaic re-laid using traditional conservation methods. Where individual tesserae were missing or damaged beyond repair, carefully matched replacement pieces were selected from our extensive stock of marble, glass and ceramic tesserae. Each replacement tessera was individually cut and shaped by hand before being carefully installed to replicate the original pattern, size, colour and laying technique.

The repaired areas were then re-grouted using appropriate conservation materials, carefully cleaned and finished to provide a durable surface while maintaining the character and appearance of the original Victorian mosaic floor. Every repair was designed to integrate sympathetically with the surrounding historic mosaic rather than dominate the original workmanship.
