Removing Failed Acrylic Sealant from a Victorian Tile Floor in Trinity, Edinburgh

BLOG

This Victorian tile restoration project involved the careful removal of a failed acrylic sealant from an original geometric tile floor in Trinity, Edinburgh. The before and after photographs below illustrate the transformation achieved following the removal of the deteriorated acrylic coating. Over time, modern sealants can become discoloured, trap dirt and moisture, and prevent historic tiled floors from breathing naturally. Using specialist conservation cleaning techniques, the non-breathable coating was carefully removed to reveal the original colours and restore the floor’s natural appearance without damaging the historic tiles.

Unlike modern ceramic floors, Victorian geometric tiles require a sympathetic approach using conservation-grade cleaning methods. Abrasive chemicals and incorrect sealant removers can permanently damage the surface or alter the appearance of the original tiles. Every floor is therefore individually assessed before treatment to ensure the safest and most effective method is used.

Following the removal of the failed sealant, the floor was carefully cleaned and finished to enhance the natural appearance of the original tiles while maintaining their breathability. As shown in the before and after images, the conservation process successfully restored the appearance of the floor while preserving the original Victorian tiles and their historic character.
