Victorian Tiles Scottish Borders, Jedburgh
BLOG
We undertook extensive relaying, cleaning and restoration of a Victorian tile floor in Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders.
Damaged and missing tiles were matched with original tiles after extensive areas of new screed installation, alongside cleaning and conservation of the rest of the historic tile floor.
The house was an old Merchants mill house and as such was adjacent to a river in a valley. At only a couple of metres above the water table there was a lot of moisture present in the body of the building. This had resulted in efflorescence salt blooming upon the Victorian tiles surface.
We had to approach this in a sensitive way with minimal saturation of the Victorian tiles during the cleaning of the work and using latex bound screed so as not to introduce excess water into the floor and exacerbate the efflorescence. It was an extensive project and the finish was testament to our skills in repair, clean and care of Victorian tile floors.
