Victorian tile project with replacement and repair in a vestibule in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The vestibule in the Morningside area of Edinburgh had surface and ingrained dirt and residue in and on the historic tiles, damaged and cracked tiles from subsidence and impact damage, and loss of colour and patina. The original grout had also been lost.
The Victorian tile conservation team undertook a sensitive clean of the historic tiles, with care being taken with the encaustic tiles to the centre.
Damaged and cracked Victorian tiles were matched from out stock of original tiles. The deficient tiles were carefully cut from the original fabric and the replacement tiles inserted with tile adhesive. The grout was colour matched to the original and instated to the floor and finally once dried a finish coat was applied to enhance the colour of the tiles and provide protection going into the future.
